Chapter 1 - Mr. and Mrs. Francis James . . .

The lineage of our family goes back to Mr. and Mrs. Francis James. They came to America from England between 1795-1800 and settled in what is now the state of Maine.

The area of Maine was first settled around 1622 when two members of the Plymouth Company were given land grants by King Charles of England. Settlers from England were farmers and merchants for these "landlords" for more than two decades. In 1650, these "land lords" were overthrown and Maine came under the jurisdiction of Massachusetts. It took until 1819 for Maine to become its own territory and in 1820 it was admitted as the twenty-third state of the United States of America.

We have been unable to document the arrival of Mr. and Mrs. Francis James partly due to the unsettled condition of Maine and the fact that Maine did not require birth or death records to be filed until 1892, almost one hundred years after their arrival.

I would suspect that Mr. and Mrs. Francis James left Maine crossing the country to Hartleyville, Ohio before the 1810 census was taken in Maine. None of the very early census records are complete and it is very possible that Mr. and Mrs. Francis James and their family were missed, or were "en route" at the time of the census taking. They eventually settled in Hartleyville, Ohio, and were buried there in 1859 or 1860.

We do know that Mr. and Mrs. Francis James had seven children; Elisha, Marcia, Hannah, Francis P., Anna, Joseph, and Eunice. Through census records of other states, we know that Hannah James was born in 1805 and Francis P. in 1807 in Maine.

Elisha James, possibly the oldest child of Mr. and Mrs. Francis James never married.

Marcia James, another child of Mr. and Mrs. Francis James married Thomas Davis.

Hannah James was born in 1805 in Maine. She married Thomas Louis Love, who had been married before. They were married in Dover, Athens County, Ohio before 1830. They lived in Trimble, Athens County, Ohio for many years and this is where they are buried.

Hannah James and Thomas Love had seven children; Sarah J., Hannah Ann, Lovina Parker, John Burgese, Elizabeth Jane, and Daniel Smart.

Francis P. James was born in 1807 in Maine. In 1830, Francis lived in Trimble, Athens County, Ohio. Francis P. James married Sally C. Wells. She was born in 1811 in Ohio. In 1840 and 1850, Francis and Sally lived in Delaware County, Indiana. They had moved to Fairfield, Jefferson County, Iowa by 1860. A letter from Fairfield written by Francis P. James, dated February 21, 1877 states, "they had had a very fine winter." On March 7, 1887, they lived at Beckwith, Jefferson County, Iowa. "Francis and Sally were as well as common but were getting old and feeble. The cold winter was hard on them. Francis was not able to do but very little work that winter. Your Aunt Sally does her work largely with the help of the boys. We don't farm very largely. We try to raise enough to do us but miss it sometimes. Our corn crop was lite last year but I think we will get along without buying." John Burgese Love and his wife Sarah Ann also lived with Francis and Sally James while they farmed at Beckwith, Jefferson County, Iowa. John and Sarah re¬turned to Athens County, Ohio and we presume Francis and Sally James passed away around 1890 in Jefferson County, Iowa.

Francis and Sally had eleven children; Mary, Sarah, Elisha, Elizabeth, Hannah, Francis, Anna, Marcia, Eunice, Susan, and Esther.

Mary James was born in 1830 in Ohio. She married William Downing. William was born in 1812 in Virginia. In the winter of 1877, William was very sick but he was up again by February. By September 15, 1881, William and Mary had sold their farm in Iowa and were rump and stump, planning to go to California. We do not know if they made this trip or decided against it.

Mary and William Downing possibly had seven children; Jacob (1842), Ellburg (Endrixon -1844), Alvin (1846), Mary (1848), Charles (1850), Phillip (1852), and Lewis, eight months old when the 1860 census was taken. All of the children were born in Iowa.

Sarah James was born in 1832 in Ohio. She married Hosea Long. "She was in very poor health in the winter of 1877."

Elisha J. James was born in 1834 in Ohio. He was shown in the 1850 Indiana census at age sixteen.

Elizabeth James was born in 1836 in Ohio.

Hannah James was born in 1837 in Indiana. She married the Reverend Richard Caviness. She was his first wife.

Francis James was born in 1838 in Indiana. She was twelve years old when the 1850 Indiana census was taken.

Anna James was born in 1839 in Indiana.

Marcia James was born in 1844 in Indiana. She married W. B. (Will) James. They had children and "the youngest child was very sick in 1877." However the child was about well in February.

Eunice James was born in 1847 in Indiana. She married Eber Davidson. In 1877, "They bought the Shelly farm from Eunice's father, Francis P. James, and were growing their crops on it.

Susan James married Jim Huff. They had three sons. The boys lived on their grandparents farm in 1887 and apparently were raised by them.

Esther James was born in 1853 in Indiana. She married Reverend Richard Caviness. She was his second wife. Apparently Hannah James died shortly after her marriage and Esther then married the Reverend Caviness.

Anna James was born between 1810 and 1815, the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Francis James. Annie married Edmond Davis. In 1830, Edmond and Annie lived in Tate, Clermont County, Ohio. On June 18, 1890, "Aunt Ann Davis is up to Uncle Lauren Coms on a visit. Hetta Davis is living at Bob Coms."

Edmond and Annie had one son Frank, who was under five years of age in 1830. Later another son Reuben was born.

Joseph James was born in 1817 in Ohio. Joseph married Eliza beth Wells. Elizabeth was born in 1815 in Ohio and she was probably the sister of Sally. Joseph farmed in Trimble, Athens County, Ohio in 1850.

Joseph and Elizabeth had five sons; Isaiah, born in 1839; Samuel born in 1841; William, born in 1842; Newton, born in 1844; Thomas, born in 1849. They were all born in Ohio.

Eunice James married Edward Storer. We know a little about the family of Edward.

His mother, Mary Storer, was born February 11, 1797 and she died March 19, 1881. She was buried in the Beechgrove Cemetery in Glouster, Ohio.

Mary Storer had at least four children; Richard, Edward, Sarah, and Elisha.

Richard Storer was born February 24, 1827 in Pennsylvania. He was a farmer in Athens County, Ohio in 1860. Richard married Sarah around 1855. Sarah had been born in 1824 in Ohio. Richard died April 24, 1900 and he is buried at the Beechgrove Cemetery in Glouster, Ohio.

Richard and Sarah had eight children; Mary, Rebecca, Sarah, Amy, Robert, William, John, and Son.

Mary B. Storer was born in 1856 in Ohio. She died young between 1860 and 1870.

Rebecca Storer was born in 1857 in Ohio. At thirteen, she was helping her mother.

Sarah E. Storer was born in 1859 in Ohio. She married I. N. Price. Sarah E. died June 15, 1883 at twenty-four years of age.

Amy M. Storer was born in late 1860 in Ohio. In 1870 she was still attending school.

Robert Storer was born in 1862 in Ohio. He also was at tending school in 1870.

William Storer was born in 1865 in Ohio.

John Storer was born in 1867 in Ohio.

Baby boy who was one month old in 1870 when the Ohio census was taken.

Edward Storer was born in 1821 in Pennsylvania. Edward married Eunice James around 1848. They farmed in Athens County, Ohio. Eunice died while the children were small (between 1852-59), and Edward married Mary A.. Mary was born in 1830 in Pennsylvania.

Edward and Eunice had three known children; Richard J., Francis J.B., William, and maybe Henry.

Richard J. Storer was born June 10, 1849 in Ohio. He died August 20, 1870 at twenty-one years of age. He is buried in the Beechgrove Cemetery in Glouster, Ohio.

Francis J. B. Storer was born in 1850 in Ohio. He was of¬ten called James.

William S. (H. ) Storer was born in 1852 in Ohio. William married Eva B. Maxwell around 1887. Eva B. Maxwell Storer died in 1907. Both Eva and Blanche, their daughter, are buried in the Beechgrove Cemetery in Glouster, Ohio.

William and Eva had one daughter; Blanche May Storer, born May 19, 1888. Blanche died December 17, 1904 at sixteen years of age.

The fourth child of Edward Storer and Eunice James is questionable. Our family records indicate Henry was the fourth son but the 1860 Ohio census indicates William S. as William H. (Henry) and son number four as Robert, the son of Edward and Mary Storer.

Edward and Mary A. had at least one son, Robert.

Robert Storer was born in 1860 in Ohio. He was eight months old when the 1860 Ohio census was taken.

Mary Storer's third child was Sarah Storer, born in 1831 and she died in 1915. She is buried in the Beechgrove Cemetery in Glouster, Ohio.

Elisha Storer was born September 5, 1832 and died February 26, 1857 at twenty-four years of age. It is probable that he was not married. He is buried in the Beechgrove Cemetery in Glouster, Ohio.

One other grave in the Beechgrove Cemetery is that of Rachel Storer, an infant daughter, who died at one year, one month, and four days. We do not know to which family of Storers, she belonged.
