Chapter 2 - Hannah James and Thomas Love . . .
Hannah James, the third child of Mr. and Mrs. Francis James married Thomas Louis Love. Thomas Louis Love was born in 1795 in Virginia. Of his family, we know very little. He had one sister, Eliza Love, who was born in 1808 in New Jersey. In 1840 Eliza lived in Wheeling, Belmont County, Ohio. I believe she ran a boarding house at this time. In 1850, she lived in Green County, Ohio. Eliza Love died in 1880. She is buried in the Bishopville Cemetery in Bishopville, Ohio.
Eliza had two sons before 1850, Sam Love, 15, born in Pennsylvania and William Love, 13, born in Ohio.
It is possible that a reference in the 1870 Ohio census refers to William Love, son of Eliza. He resided in Athens Village, Athens County, Ohio where he was an iron ware manufacturer. His wife was Catherine (35).
William and Catherine according to the 1870 census had seven children; Caroline, 16, Eliza Ann, 14, Emma, 12, Eber, 9, Effie B., 7, Andrew, 5, and John, 10 months.
The family records say that Thomas Love had a sister Polly Love. This may have been his nickname for Eliza or perhaps we know nothing else of Polly.
Thomas was first married to Miss Pugsley around 1815.
Thomas and Miss Pugsley had three children; Samantha, Sophironia, and Mary Ann.
Samantha Love, born between 1815-1820 married Daniel Hartley. They had five sons and three daughters. One daughter was Mary Ann Hartley.
Sophironia Love was born between 1820-1825 and died young, probably around 1835.
Mary Ann Love, born between 1825-1830, married James Learned. He was a soldier for the North during the Civil War. An interesting letter from him is reprinted in Appendix A.
Thomas Love married Hannah James in the spring of 1828. They lived on a farm in Hartleyville, Ohio for many years. "Thomas was a firey red-head. His hair was a mass of curls which would not straighten out. His death was hastened by an accident with the windlass of his well. It flew back, hitting him in the stomach and he suffered continuously until his death. Although Hannah was well at the time of his death, she died soon afterwards."
"The two old log houses that the Love's lived in are still standing and are occupied by nice families. They are equipped with electricity, bottled gas and conveniences of this age. Hartleyville isn't any larger than it was a hundred years ago but all the houses are well kept." This quote came from a letter that Mary Catherine Love wrote to Maude Rouse Carman in 1951. After hearing from Mary Love, Maude visited Hartleyville and drank from the well that killed her great-grandfather.
Hannah and Thomas Love had seven children; Sarah J., Hannah Ann, Lovina Parker, John Burgese, Elizabeth Jane, James, and Daniel Smart.
Sarah J. Love was born May 25, 1829 in Ohio. She married Nehemiah M. Davis. Nehemiah was born in 1820 in Ohio. Sarah often wrote to her brother, John, and her sister, Lovina. In 1850 and 1860, Sarah and Nehemiah lived in Trimble, Athens County, Ohio. Nehemiah was a carpenter and a farmer. In 1870, they were still in Trimble, Ohio but Nehemiah lists his profession as just "farmer". Sarah J. Love Davis died September 28, 1890 and Nehemiah M. Davis died March 19, 1898. They are both buried in the Beechgrove Cemetery in Glouster, Ohio.

They repurchased the original "Love" farm and reestablished their home in Hartleyville, Ohio. John Burgese Love died June 8, 1888 at fifty four years of age. Sarah Ann May Love died in 1896. Mary still lived in Hartleyville, Ohio in 1951. Mary Catherine Love corresponded with Maude Rouse Carman. In her letters she tells us: "Two of our sons were also born in the log house. These houses are within eyesight of my home. We live at a little village called Oakdale about one-half mile south of Hartleyville." Of her own family; "I had six children, four of which live near in Hartleyville, Ohio. I had one son and one son-in-law in World War I, six grandsons were in World War II. William Charles Love, son of John Burgese and Sarah Ann Love was born in 1857 in Ohio. He married and had one daughter, Nellie May.
Nellie May Love was born March 1, 1885. She was reared by Mr. Allen who was a neighbor of Dorsey and Lovina McClelland. Nellie May Love married Bronson Chambers.
They had two children; Marie and Harold. Maude Rouse Carman also met them on her trip to Ohio.
Sylvia Jane was called Silva by her Aunt Lovina. She was a few years older than Lovina's twin girls, Cora and Ora. This letter was written to Silva from them March 16, 1880 from Bloomington, Kansas.
Dear Cousin Silva,
We would like to see you. Do you go to school? We
haven't gone but a week or two. We read in the second reader. We learned to read at home. We are seven years old last December.
Cora and Ora
We know nothing of Arlie, Bailey, and Frankie, the other three children of John Burgese Love.
Elizabeth Jane Love, daughter of Thomas and Hannah Love, was born in 1837 in Ohio. She married Jno Staubis. Jno was taken prisoner during the Civil War and despite Elizabeth sending him barrels of food, he starved to death. He was in the Andersonville prison and the guards would not give him the food Elizabeth sent. Elizabeth Love Staubis married again to James Leonard. She died of pneumonia in 1888.
Elizabeth and Jno had one daughter; Emma Staubis.
Emma Staubis married Bird Kirkham. Lovina writes in a letter dated march 16, 1888, "We have been looking for Emma Staubis Kirkham for a long time. She sent us word, she was coming for a visit. She lives fifty-five miles from here (Bloomington, Kansas). Frank (Mathilda Francis McClelland Winslow) stayed one night with her when they (Frank and her husband Doc) came out last fall. She had a baby girl about a year old. She calls it Maude." Emma Kirkham's address is Jewel City, Nebraska. On September 15, 1881, Dorsey McClelland writes, "Emmy and her man was out to see us. They are getting along very well I guess."
Emma and Bird Kirkham had five children; Ben, Maude, Floy, Harry, and Pete.
Ben Kirkham moved to Oklahoma, where he lived but never married.
Maude Kirkham married Hampton Paxton of Osborne, Kansas. Maude died in California.
They had two daughters and one son.
Floy Kirkham married Reverend Scott, a Methodist minister. They divorced with no children. Floy was a teacher and then a housemother at the University of Oregon in Eugene, Oregon. She died in the early 1940's.
We have no information on Harry.
Pete Kirkham was in World War I. He was shell shocked and came home, only to wander off and never be found.
James Love was born in 1839 in Ohio. In 1860, he was running the Hoge farm in Trimble, Athens County, Ohio. James and Nancy Hoge were in their early sixties and their daughter, Elizabeth, born in 1836 in Virginia lived on the farm. In 1859 James Love married Elizabeth Hoge and they had one son Thomas R. J., who was two months old when the 1860 census was taken.
James and Elizabeth had four children; Thomas R.J., Park, Jone, and Mary before Elizabeth passed away.
James later married Julia Jones.
They had one son, William, and several daughters.
We know of Henry Dow Love, son of William Love. Private 363, Infantry, (1st Division). Died April 15, 1942. He is buried in the Beachgrove Cemetery in Glouster, Ohio. It is possible that James and Julia's son married and had this son but we have no substantiation of this.
Daniel Smart Love was the seventh child of Hannah and Thomas Love. He was born in 1846 in Athens County, Ohio. Being the youngest, Daniel was the last child to leave home. The 1860 Ohio census lists only; Thomas 64, Hannah 58, and Daniel 14. We have no further information on Daniel or his family.
