Preface . . .
This book, entitled "From James to McClelland", tells what is known about our mutual ancestors. Unfortunately, not "all" is known. I have researched both the past and present for the last two and one half years and I still find gaps in my information.
I do not believe that a work like this is ever finished, and some day I will amend this book and attempt to fill the missing gaps. I feel that I owe all of you who have supplied information, a chance to see what you have said. I have written many letters just trying to track down Hannah James' birth place with no success. So I fear that more research on the McClelland side must wait for awhile.
However, I am definitely still interested in the research and I want to ask all of you who read this to think about family stories, both old and new, that you have heard and please go through your attics, photo albums, scrapbooks, and legal papers for any information that does not appear in this book. If you find information such as; "Aunt Cora lived in this house in Wagner, Illinois in 1895" or "Stella on her fourth birthday, May 5, 1905", written on the back of a picture, etc. or think of a story that is not contained in this book, please send it to me. I regret that I cannot appreciate it if it is in the attic, on your dresser, or in your other purse. This information will allow me to expand the book and come closer to having a com¬plete history.
Photocopies of any deed, will, birth or marriage certificates would certainly be appreciated. Not only to further my new research but to confirm the data that I have already written down. In most cases, I have verified what one record or person has told me through at least one other source, sometimes two or three people have told me the same story and in this way I feel that all of the information herein is accurate.
For dates, I have chosen to use the recorded one such as on the census forms or birth and marriage certificates when available because they were written at the time, not added some years later to the family Bible or address books, even though mistakes are found on of¬ficial records. I found one census report on Eunice James where her sex was female and on the next census Unice was a male. The birth dates were the same and since another source had said that there were four James' girls and three James' sons, I determined that Eunice was indeed a girl, a tomgirl perhaps, but a girl none the less.
So in closing, I hope you will enjoy reading this book and will keep in mind what I've said here concerning more information. I will sincerely appreciate any and all that is sent to me.
